Training deep ConvNets requires large labeled datasets. However, collecting pixel-level labels for medical image segmentation is very expensive and requires a high level of expertise. In addition, most existing segmentation masks provided by clinical experts focus on specific anatomical structures. In this paper, we propose a method dedicated to handle such partially labeled medical image datasets. We propose a strategy to identify pixels for which labels are correct, and to train Fully Convolutional Neural Networks with a multi-label loss adapted to this context. In addition, we introduce an iterative confidence self-training approach inspired by curriculum learning to relabel missing pixel labels, which relies on selecting the most confident prediction with a specifically designed confidence network that learns an uncertainty measure which is leveraged in our relabeling process. Our approach, INERRANT for Iterative coNfidencE Relabeling of paRtial ANnoTations, is thoroughly evaluated on two public datasets (TCAI and LITS), and one internal dataset with seven abdominal organ classes. We show that INERRANT robustly deals with partial labels, performing similarly to a model trained on all labels even for large missing label proportions. We also highlight the importance of our iterative learning scheme and the proposed confidence measure for optimal performance. Finally we show a practical use case where a limited number of completely labeled data are enriched by publicly available but partially labeled data. Inflammation and oxidative stress are common pathologies in a wide range of chronic diseases. Polysaccharides are known to exhibit antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potential and are suggested to possess immunomodulatory potential. Herein, the immunomodulatory activity of a sulfated polysaccharide (PS) separated from a brown marine algae Turbinaria ornata is studied in LPS instigated systemic inflammation in experimental rats. Male SD rats are pretreated with different doses of PS (2.5, 5, 10mg/kg bw) for a week followed by inducing systemic inflammation using LPS (10mg/kg i.p.). PA intoxication is reported to cause severe acute liver damage, typically known as hepatic sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (HSOS), but it remains obscure whether the acute liver damage may progress into chronic liver disease characterized by hepatic fibrosis. This study aims to characterize the biochemical markers of liver injury and histological features of regressive and progressive liver fibrosis, and to examine changes in hepatic gene expression that may underpin mechanisms of fibrogenesis in rats induced by retrorsine (RTS), a representative toxic PA. Rats were gavaged with RTS via two dosing regimens, i.e. a single dose of 40mg/kg (Group 1) and two doses of 40mg/kg and 20mg/kg on day 0 and day 7 (Group 2), respectively. Rats receiving one (Group 3) or two (Group 4) doses of vehicle served as negative controls. The animals were followed for up to 16 weeks by serum biochemical analyses and histological examination, and gene expression assays of lssive liver fibrosis, respectively. Critical sentences included two phonologically similar or dissimilar noun phrases (henceforth NPs) followed by a pronoun. We examined brain activity time-locked to the onsets of the second NP, and the pronoun to investigate the encoding and retrieval of the NPs, respectively. Encoding the second NP resulted in smaller N400 amplitudes when the preceding NP was phonologically similar, for both younger and older adults, suggesting age-invariant encoding facilitation with increasing phonological similarity. However, when processing the pronoun, younger adults exhibited greater negativity following phonologically similar NPs, suggesting retrieval difficulty, whereas older adults showed greater negativity for pronouns following dissimilar NPs, suggesting an apparent retrieval facilitation. A post-hoc behavioral experiment suggested that older adults perform shallow processing during retrieval. The results suggest age-related decline in retrieval, but not encoding, of phonological information.Good water quality is essential to the health of marine ecosystems, yet current metrics used to track water quality in the Great Barrier Reef are not strongly tied to ecological outcomes. There is a need for a better water quality index (WQI). Benthic irradiance, the amount of light reaching the seafloor, is critical for coral and seagrass health and is strongly affected by water quality. It therefore represents a strong candidate for use as a water quality indicator. Here, we introduce a new index based on remote sensing benthic light (bPAR) from ocean color. Resulting bPAR index timeseries, based on the extent to which the observed bPAR fell short of the locally- and seasonally-specific optimum, showed strong spatial and temporal variability, which was consistent with the dynamics that govern changes in water clarity in the Great Barrier Reef. Our new index is ecologically relevant, responsive to changes in light availability and provides a robust metric that may complement current Great Barrier Reef water quality metrics.
