Aim To determine diagnostic capabilities of left ventricular (LV) global longitudinal systolic strain (GLSS) in stress echocardiography (stress-EchoCG) with a treadmill test for diagnosing the functional significance of the degree of coronary stenosis.Material and methods The study included 121 patients (73 men aged 68.3±7.7 years) with suspected or previously diagnosed ischemic heart disease (IHD). Speckle-tracking stress-EchCG (method of tracking speckles on two-dimensional gray-scale ultrasonic images) with a treadmill test and coronarography was performed for all patients. The patients were divided into 3 groups based on the severity of coronary artery (CA) stenosis according to the Gensini scale.Results LV GLSS at rest did not significantly differ between the study groups. After the exercise, LV GLSS was significantly lower in patients with pronounced CA stenosis than in patients without or with moderate CA stenosis (15.9±4.6 % vs. 20.6±3.7 % (p<0.001) and 19.6±3.0 % (p=0.003), respectively). Postexercise LV GLSS <16.9% suggested a pronounced CA stenosis with a sensitivity of 80% and a specificity of 70% (area under the curve, AUC, 0.76±0.06 at 95 % confidence interval, CI, 0.63-0.89; р<0.001). In the patient group without CA stenosis, LV GLSS showed a significant increase after completion of the exercise (from 19.1±3.1 to 20.6±3.7; p=0.04).Conclusion Evaluation of LV GLSS and its dynamics in stress-EchoCG with a treadmill test may be promising in patients with IHD, since in most patients with pronounced CA stenosis, LV GLSS is reduced at baseline and further reduces in response to exercise. Compared with an earlier analysis of the AWW, our study found largely positive views of experiences of aging, associated with new opportunities and increased self-acceptance. However, the safety of this nano-based polymer, which has direct contact with the human system, has not been fully understood. The present study investigated the cytocompatibility and hemocompatibility responses of linear low-density polyethylene polymer (LLDPE) embedded with difference ratios of heterogeneous TiO2/ZnO nanocomposites. Exposure of the blood and fibroblast cells to LLDPE/100Z and LLDPE/25T75Z/10% nanocomposite films for 48 and 72 h decreased their viability by less than 40%, compared with LLDPE, LLDPE/100T and LLDPE/25T75Z/5% nanocomposite films. It also presented possible cellular damage and cytotoxicity, which was supported by the findings from the significant release of extracellular lactate dehydrogenase profiles and cell survival assay Further observation using an electron microscope revealed that LLDPE films with heterogeneous 25T75Z/5% promoted cell adhesion. Factors influencing health literacy include language barriers. Population data from a general practice where we were on placement demonstrated 31.4% of patients did not speak English as a main language, indicating how language barriers could be affecting their healthcare. A needs analysis survey carried out within the practice showed 26% of patients did not feel confident in managing their diabetes. Our aim was therefore to organise focus group sessions targeting these concerns, with translations and a leaflet being provided. The barriers to effective diabetic management were identified as a lack of understanding of management of the condition, particularly dietary guidance; poor medication adherence; travel and lack of exercise. A leaflet was created in both Arabic and English addressing these areas. Patients with diabetes were recruited to participate in the focus group (n = 20). The intervention was assessed using questionnaire data obtained before and after the focus group. The focus group enabled certain barriers to diabetic management to be overcome with patients showing a improvement in understanding of prescribed medication and patients said they now felt more confident in managing their diabetes. Ten-minute consultations in general practice settings are often insufficient to guage patient understanding of their disease. Focus group sessions are a simple but effective way of educating patients on their illness, encouraging them to be more proactive in managing their condition.Zika virus (ZIKV) is a serious public health concern that may lead to neurological disorders in affected individuals.
