Nail metals have been studied for exposure biomonitoring and compared to other biological media. The aim of this study was to explore the applicability of preschool fingernail lead and cadmium as subchronic exposure biomarkers. Nail lead and cadmium levels (NLL and NCL) of 602 preschool children (age 1-4 years) who attended 21 DCC in São Paulo, Brazil, in 2013 were analyzed. Results were compared against blood lead and cadmium levels (BLL and BCL) found in a previous study. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) analyses were performed for both samples. DCC and metal contaminated sites (MCS) were georeferencing. Logistic regression tests were applied to verify associations between nail metal levels and risk factors (sex, age, maternal education, secondary smoking, DCC geographic district, vehicle flow density, relative altitude and distance between DCC and nearest MCS) (p 13.9 μg.dL-1; medium ≥5 μg.dL-1 and ≤13.9 μg.dL-1) and also tested the associations in order to verify if nail lead levels are affected by exposure intensity defined by blood metals concentrations. To further understand the impacts of prenatal BPA exposure, we analyzed lipidomic profiles in the postnatal day (PND) 21 and 60 rats using a high-resolution QTOF mass spectrometer coupled with a HPLC system. We found that the total lipid content was significantly decreased in PND21 females prenatally exposed to 5000 μg/kg bw/day of BPA. Levels of total fatty acids, acylcarnitines, and monoacylglycerols significantly increased in both female and male BPA-exposed rats at PND21. An elevation in total cholesterol esters and reductions in triacylglycerols and monogalactosyl diacylglycerols were found only in PND21 females prenatally exposed to BPA. Interestingly, opposite responses were observed for phospholipids and sphingolipids between PND21 females and males following BPA exposure. The effects on the body weight and total lipid content were mitigated in the latter stage, although the alterations of lipid profiles continued until PND60. A Data Integration Analysis for Biomarker discovery using Latent cOmponents (DIABLO) revealed a high correlation of the lipidome with our previously published transcriptome data. DIABLO also identified potential biomarkers of prenatal exposure to BPA; glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase 1 (Gpd1) and glyceronephosphate O-acyltransferase (Gnpat), which are involved in the glycerophospholipid metabolism, in females and males, respectively. Collectively, we highlighted the sex- and age-dependent effects of prenatal BPA exposure on hepatic lipid homeostasis in rat offspring.In this paper we describe how forest management practices in Fennoscandian countries, namely Sweden and Finland, expose streams to multiple stressors over space and time. In this region, forestry includes several different management actions and we explore how these may successively disturb the same location over 60-100 year long rotation periods. Of these actions, final harvest and associated road construction, soil scarification, and/or ditch network maintenance are the most obvious sources of stressors to aquatic ecosystems. Yet, more subtle actions such as planting, thinning of competing saplings and trees, and removing logging residues also represent disturbances around waterways in these landscapes. We review literature about how these different forestry practices may introduce a combination of physicochemical stressors, including hydrological change, increased sediment transport, altered thermal and light regimes, and water quality deterioration. We further elaborate on how the single stressors may combine and interact and we consequently hypothesise how these interactions may affect aquatic communities and processes. Because production forestry is practiced on a large area in both countries, the various stressors appear multiple times during the rotation cycles and potentially affect the majority of the stream network length within most catchments. We concluded that forestry practices have traditionally not been the focus of multiple stressor studies and should be investigated further in both observational and experimental fashion. Stressors accumulate across time and space in forestry dominated landscapes, and may interact in unpredictable ways, limiting our current understanding of what forested stream networks are exposed to and how we can design and apply best management practices.
