The objective of this study was to describe bladder cancer outcomes as a function of race among patients with high-risk non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) in an equal-access setting. A total of 412 patients with high-risk NMIBC who received bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) from January 1, 2010, to December 31, 2015, were assessed. The authors used the Kaplan-Meier method to estimate event-free survival and Cox regression to determine the association between race and recurrence, progression, disease-specific, and overall survival outcomes. A total of 372 patients who had complete data were included in the analysis; 48 (13%) and 324 (87%) were Black and White, respectively. There was no difference in age, sex, smoking status, or Charlson Comorbidity Index by race. White patients had a higher socioeconomic status with a greater percentage of patients living above the poverty level in comparison with Black patients (median, 85% vs 77%; P < .001). A total of 360 patients (97%) received adequate induction BCG, and 145 patients (39%) received adequate maintenance BCG therapy. There was no significant difference in rates of adequate induction or maintenance BCG therapy according to race. There was no significant difference in recurrence (hazard ratio [HR], 1.53; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.64-3.63), progression (HR, 0.77; 95% CI, 0.33-1.82), bladder cancer-specific survival (HR, 1.01; 95% CI, 0.30-3.46), or overall survival (HR, 0.97; 95% CI, 0.56-1.66) according to Black race versus White race. The efficacy and safety of transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) plus lenvatinib in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and portal vein tumor thrombus (PVTT) have not been evaluated. In this open-label, single-center, randomized trial (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier NCT04127396), participants with previously untreated HCC and type I-IV PVTT were randomized 11 to receive TACE plus lenvatinib (arm L; orally once daily, 12 mg for body weight ≥60 kg or 8 mg for body weight <60 kg) or TACE plus sorafenib (arm S; 400 mg orally twice daily in 28-day cycles). However, there are no evidence-based violence prevention interventions for homeless populations. This study is an evaluation of a novel mindfulness-based peer-leader intervention designed to reduce violence and improve mindfulness in YAEH. JAK inhibition A social network of YAEH receiving services at a drop-in agency was recruited in Summer 2018 (n = 106) and peer-leaders identified at baseline (n = 12). Peer leaders were trained in mindfulness and yoga skills during a 1-day intensive workshop and seven 1-h weekly follow-up workshops and encouraged to share their knowledge with in-network peers. Postintervention data were collected 2 and 3 months after baseline. Two one-way repeated-measures analyses of variance (ANOVAs) tested differences in means for mindfulness and fighting. ANOVA models showed significant increases in group mean mindfulness F(2, 110) = 3.42, p less then 0.05 and significant decreases in group mean violent behavior F(2, 112) = 5.23, p less then 0.01 at the network level. Findings indicate a network-based, peer-leader model can be effective for influencing complex, socially conditioned attitudes and behaviors among YAEH. Additional advantages of the peer-leader model include relatively few direct-service person-hours required from providers and convenience to participants able practice skills in their relevant social contexts.The use of plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) to enhance plant growth and protection against heavy metal toxicity has been extensively studied. However, its potentiality to reduce arsenate toxicity, a threat to plant growth and metabolism, has been hardly investigated. Moreover, the toxic effect of arsenic oxide nanoparticles (As-NPs) on plants and possible mechanisms for its alleviation has not yet been explored. In this study, the impact of the bioactive actinomycete Streptomyces spp. on the growth, physiology and stress-related metabolites, such as sugars and proline, on As-NPs-stressed wheat and maize plants was investigated. Soil amendment with arsenic oxide nanoparticles (As-NPs) induced the uptake and accumulation of As in the plants of both species, resulting in reduced growth and photosynthesis, but less marked in maize than in wheat plants. Under As-NPs-free conditions, Streptomyces spp. treatment markedly improved growth and photosynthesis in wheat only. The application of Streptomyces spp. reduced As accumulation, recovered the As-NPs-induced growth, photosynthesis inhibition, and oxidative damage in plants of both species. Wheat plants specifically accumulated soluble sugars, while both species accumulated proline. Under As-NPs stress, the ornithine pathway of proline biosynthesis was more important in maize than in wheat plants, while the glutamine pathway was dominant in wheat ones. The addition of Streptomyces spp. further induced the accumulation of proline and starch in both plant species. Overall, despite a different response to Streptomyces spp. under nontoxic conditions, the amendment of as-contaminated soil with Streptomyces spp. induced similar metabolic responses in the two tested species, which trigger stress recovery.
