The resulting shape has already earned the building the name ‘De Verrekijker’. The new R&E facility forms an essential step in the sustainable transformation of USP East. This building creates space to dismantle the outdated Martinus de Bruin Building and to repurpose the construction materials freed up from it in the realisation of the new faculty building. The transformation of USP East symbolises the sustainable ambition of Utrecht University. This step contributes to the realisation of a CO2-neutral campus and illustrates the university's leading role in socially responsible and circular construction.This new facility is a crucial part of the redevelopment for the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and will be built next to De Tolakker, the farm of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. The refinement of this cottage is in the asymmetrical head design, detailing and interior. The house is completely closed on one side by putting the slates vertical on the façade. The other side opens up to the green and is equipped with movable window shutters. Important insect populations also suffer at the hands of our domestic efforts. The house is constructed in wood and opens its façade with window shutters towards the green garden. The design has been realized by a special collaboration between Zecc and interior designer Roel van Norel. Zecc designed the basic concept of the house and then Roel van Norel has developed the plan all the way into the smallest detail and has built the house together with the contractor. Plans were bubbling for almost a year at UCo, as a small group mused over how they could use the outdoor office space for a garden and maybe grow food for employees. UCo is a relatively young community of sustainability professionals, founded in 2017.
