We developed a graded-index plastic optical fiber (GI POF) that enables lower-noise radio frequency (RF) transmission than conventional multimode fibers for short-distance household applications ( less then 100m). It is shown that reflection noise degrades RF transmission, regardless of the carrier frequency, through the spurious generation that accompanies the RF modulation of a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser. The GI POF with distinctive mode coupling, which is closely related to its microscopic polymer structure, suppresses noise and spurious generation to improve transmission quality. Our low-noise radio-over-GI-POF technology will offer significant advantages for optical wiring systems for broadcast and communication in small- and medium-scale buildings.Electric-field-induced second-harmonic generation is demonstrated in silicon waveguides with reverse biased lateral p-i-n junctions. Phase matching is achieved by periodically poling the applied electric field. Two different poling configurations are compared in the first, the p- and n-type doped regions of the junctions are on different sides of the waveguide (simple configuration), while in the second, they are alternated periodically across the waveguide sides (interdigitated configuration). Both simulations and experiments show that the generation efficiency is increased by 10 times comparing the interdigitated and simple configurations. The effective second-order susceptibility modulation obtained at a reverse bias voltage of 3.5 V is Δχeff,S(2)≃0.14pm/V for the simple configuration and Δχeff,I(2)≃0.64pm/V for the interdigitated one.Optical scanning holography (OSH) is an attractive technique since 3D information can be obtained with a single pixel detector. It occurs when disc material related to an intervertebral disc penetrates the spinal dura and lies in an intradural extramedullary location. A 60 years old male patient presented with complaints of low back pain and right lower limb radiculopathy of 2 weeks duration. Neurological examination revealed the weakness of extensor hallucis longus and ankle dorsiflexion with diminished sensation corresponding to fourth and fifth lumbar (L4-L5) dermatome on the right side. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a large sequestered fragment with intradural extensions and posterior longitudinal ligament tear. Intradural nerve root showed significant displacement with severe central canal and right lateral recess stenosis. Discectomy was performed along with the removal of the intradural extension. The postoperative course was uneventful.Though squamous cell carcinoma is the commonest tumor, it rarely presents in the middle ear and follows a history of chronic ear discharge. Postauricular mastoid fistula is also a rare complication of chronic otitis media. These two pathological changes occurring simultaneously are even rarer. We report a rare case of a 37 years old male with a history of left-sided chronic ear discharge and conductive hearing loss. Squamous cell carcinoma along with postauricular mastoid fistula was diagnosed based on high-resolution computed tomography scan and histopathology.
