Thus, 2-aryl-1,2-dihydroquinazolin-4-ones were identified as a novel class of Anopheles arabiensis insecticides which can be used as lead molecules for the further development of more potent and safer larvicidal agents for treating malaria.Continuous respiration monitoring is important for predicting a potential disease. Due to respiration measurements using contact sensors, it is difficult to achieve continuous measurement because the sensors are inconvenient to attach. In this study, a radar sensor was used for non-contact respiration measurements. The radar sensor had a high precision and could even be used in the dark. It could also be used continuously regardless of time and place. The radar sensor relied on the periodicity of respiration to detect the respiration rate. A respiration adaptive interval was set and the respiration rate was detected through harmonic quefrency selection. As a result, it was confirmed that there was no difference between the respiratory rate measured using a respiration belt and the respiratory rate detected using a radar sensor. Furthermore, case studies on changes in the radar position and about measurement for long periods confirmed that the radar sensor could detect respiration rate continuously regardless of the position and measurement duration.Tumor suppressor genes in the CDKN2A/B locus (p15INK4b, p16INK4a, and p14ARF) function as biological barriers to transformation and are the most frequently silenced or deleted genes in human cancers. This gene silencing frequently occurs due to DNA methylation of the promoter regions, although the underlying mechanism is currently unknown. We present evidence that methylation of p16INK4a promoter is associated with DNA damage caused by interference between transcription and replication processes. see more Inhibition of replication or transcription significantly reduces the DNA damage and CpGs methylation of the p16INK4a promoter. We conclude that de novo methylation of the promoter regions is dependent on local DNA damage. DNA methylation reduces the expression of p16INK4a and ultimately removes this barrier to oncogene-induced senescence.Astrocytes are ubiquitous in the central nervous system (CNS). These cells possess thousands of individual processes, which extend out into the neuropil, interacting with neurons, other glia and blood vessels. Paralleling the wide diversity of their interactions, astrocytes have been reported to play key roles in supporting CNS structure, metabolism, blood-brain-barrier formation and control of vascular blood flow, axon guidance, synapse formation and modulation of synaptic transmission. Traditionally, astrocytes have been studied as a homogenous group of cells. However, recent studies have uncovered a surprising degree of heterogeneity in their development and function, in both the healthy and diseased brain. A better understanding of astrocyte heterogeneity is urgently needed to understand normal brain function, as well as the role of astrocytes in response to injury and disease.Bacteriophages are increasingly being used as biological control agents against pathogenic bacteria. In the present study, we isolate and characterize bacteriophage Akh-2 from Geoje Island, South Korea, to evaluate its utility in controlling motile Aeromonas septicemia. Akh-2 lysed four of the seven Aeromonas hydrophila strains tested. Transmission electron microscopy analysis showed that Akh-2 belongs to the Siphoviridae family, with head and tail sizes of 50 ± 5 and 170 ± 5 nm, respectively. One-step growth curve analysis revealed that the phage has a latent period of 50 ± 5 min and a burst size of 139 ± 5 plaque-forming units per infected cell. The phage appeared stable in a pH range of 6-8 and a temperature range of -80 to 46 °C. Based on next-generation sequencing analysis, its genome is 114,901 bp in size, with a 44.22% G + C content and 254 open reading frames. During an artificial induction of the disease, loach (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus) treated with Akh-2 showed an increased survival rate and time compared with the non-treated control. Our results suggest that Akh-2 is a potential biological agent for the treatment of Aeromonas infections in fish.Over the last decade, novel materials such as graphene derivatives, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), other two-dimensional (2D) layered materials, perovskites, as well as metal oxides and other metal nanostructures have centralized the interest of the scientific community [...].Alfalfa plants in the field can display a range of virus-like symptoms, especially when grown over many years for seed production. Most known alfalfa viruses have RNA genomes, some of which can be detected using diagnostic assays, but many viruses of alfalfa are not well characterized. This study aims to identify the RNA and DNA virus complexes associated with alfalfa plants in Australia. To maximize the detection of RNA viruses, we purified double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) for high throughput sequencing and characterized the viromes of ten alfalfa samples that showed diverse virus-like symptoms. Using Illumina sequencing of tagged cDNA libraries from immune-captured dsRNA, we identified sequences of the single-stranded RNA viruses, alfalfa mosaic virus (AMV), bean leafroll virus, a new emaravirus tentatively named alfalfa ringspot-associated virus, and persistent dsRNA viruses belonging to the families Amalgaviridae and Partitiviridae. Furthermore, rolling circle amplification and restriction enzyme digestion revealed the complete genome of chickpea chlorosis Australia virus, a mastrevirus (family Geminiviridae) previously reported only from chickpea and French bean that was 97% identical to the chickpea isolate. The sequence data also enabled the assembly of the first complete genome (RNAs 1-3) of an Australian AMV isolate from alfalfa.Evidence showing the role of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in leukemogenesis have emerged in the last decade. It has been proposed that these genes can be used as diagnosis and/or prognosis biomarkers in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). To know if lncRNAs are associated with early relapse and early mortality, a microarray-based gene expression analysis in children with B-lineage ALL (B-ALL) was conducted. Cox regression analyses were performed. Hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were calculated. LINC00152 and LINC01013 were among the most differentially expressed genes in patients with early relapse and early mortality. For LINC00152 high expression, the risks of relapse and death were HR 4.16 (95% CI 1.46-11.86) and HR 1.99 (95% CI 0.66-6.02), respectively; for LINC01013 low expression, the risks of relapse and death were HR 3.03 (95% CI 1.14-8.05) and HR 6.87 (95% CI 1.50-31.48), respectively. These results were adjusted by NCI risk criteria and chemotherapy regimen. The lncRNA-mRNA co-expression analysis showed that LINC00152 potentially regulates genes involved in cell substrate adhesion and peptidyl-tyrosine autophosphorylation biological processes.
