Multilayer graphene sheets (MLGSs) are promising nano-reinforcements that can effectively enhance the properties of polymer matrices. Despite many studies on MLGSs-reinforced polymer nanocomposites, the effect of wrinkles formed in MLGSs on the reinforcement effect and the viscoelastic properties of polymer nanocomposites has remained unknown. In this study, building upon previously developed coarse-grained models of MLGSs and poly(methyl methacrylate) coupled with molecular dynamics simulations, we have systematically investigated nanocomposites with different numbers of graphene layers and various wrinkle configurations. ERAS-0015 We find that with decreasing degree of waviness and increasing numbers of layers, the elastic modulus of the nanocomposites increases. Interestingly, we observe a sudden stress drop during shear deformation of certain wrinkled MLGSs-reinforced nanocomposites. We further conduct small amplitude oscillatory shear simulations on these nanocomposites and find that the nanocomposites with these specific wrinkle configurations also show peculiarly large loss tangents, indicating an increasing capability of energy dissipation. These behaviors are attributed to the activation of the interlayer sliding among these wrinkled MLGSs, as their interlayer shear strengths are indeed lower than flat MLGSs measured by steered molecular dynamics technique. Our study demonstrates that the viscoelastic properties and deformation mechanisms of polymer nanocomposites can be tuned through MLGS wrinkle engineering.This paper adds to an increasing body of social science literature, which engages with the research practice of "co-production." It aims to make a distinctive contribution by suggesting that what is produced under this process should be given greater attention. Previous literature has focused on the "co" (cooperative) element debating whether and under what conditions wider participation between academic and non-academic actors can be genuinely emancipatory, and the degree to which more radical research approaches centred on empowering marginalised groups have been usurped through management discourses of participatory governance. Drawing on a case study of a pilot project that developed support resources for new fathers under the auspices of a co-production research design, the paper highlights the dynamics and limitations of the process, but additionally and distinctively suggests an important way in which the success of co-production can be judged that includes practical and tangible outputs beyond academic knowledge and takes objects and materiality seriously as a dimension of co-production in an academic setting. This study explored two related questions (1) the incidence of peri-traumatic distress and dissociation in a general Algerian population during the initial stages of the COVID-19epidemic; (2) sociodemographic predictors of peri-traumatic reaction. The objective is to better understand the peri-traumatic experience in order to identify vulnerable people to whom psychological care could be offered. An online descriptive survey containing three questionnaires, a demographic questionnaire, the questionnaire for peri-traumatic distress and the questionnaire for peri-traumatic dissociation experiences, was conducted using the snowball sampling technique to select 1374Algerians. The results of this survey indicate that 32.7% of the participants present a peri-traumatic distress and 61.8% of the participants present a significant level of peri-traumatic dissociation during the initial phases of the COVID-19pandemic. In addition to confinement, stress, female gender, the origin of a particularly affected departmrs in an Algerian population during the initial phases of the COVID-19 epidemic. The Algerian population has experienced levels of distress in the low range of what has been described in the literature, while the dissociation shows that the majority of the population is affected. This result demonstrates the importance of measuring the peri-traumatic reactions according to the two dimensions of distress and dissociation, and offering psychological care for the most vulnerable people, in order to prevent the risk of their possible chronicisation, and developing post-traumatic stress disorder in later periods.Determining the structure of the (oligomeric) intermediates that form during the self-assembly of amyloidogenic peptides is challenging because of their heterogeneous and dynamic nature. Thus, there is need for methodology to analyze the underlying molecular structure of these transient species. In this work, a combination of fluorescence quenching, photo-induced crosslinking (PIC) and molecular dynamics simulation was used to study the assembly of a synthetic amyloid-forming peptide, Aβ16-22. A PIC amino acid containing a trifluormethyldiazirine (TFMD) group-Fmoc(TFMD)Phe-was incorporated into the sequence (Aβ*16-22). Electrospray ionization ion-mobility spectrometry mass-spectrometry (ESI-IMS-MS) analysis of the PIC products confirmed that Aβ*16-22 forms assemblies with the monomers arranged as anti-parallel, in-register β-strands at all time points during the aggregation assay. The assembly process was also monitored separately using fluorescence quenching to profile the fibril assembly reaction. The molecular picture resulting from discontinuous molecule dynamics simulations showed that Aβ16-22 assembles through a single-step nucleation into a β-sheet fibril in agreement with these experimental observations. This study provides detailed structural insights into the Aβ16-22 self-assembly processes, paving the way to explore the self-assembly mechanism of larger, more complex peptides, including those whose aggregation is responsible for human disease.Inherited retinal dystrophies (IRDs) affect 1 in 3000 individuals worldwide and are genetically heterogeneous, with over 270 identified genes and loci; however, there are still many identified disorders with no current genetic etiology. Whole exome sequencing (WES) provides a hypothesis-free first examination of IRD patients in either a clinical or research setting to identify the genetic cause of disease. We present a study of IRD in ten families from Alberta, Canada, through the lens of novel gene discovery. We identify the genetic etiology of IRDs in three of the families to be variants in known disease-associated genes, previously missed by clinical investigations. In addition, we identify two potentially novel associations LRP1 in early-onset drusen formation and UBE2U in a multi-system condition presenting with retinoschisis, cataracts, learning disabilities, and developmental delay. We also describe interesting results in our unsolved cases to provide further information to other investigators of these blinding conditions.
