INTRODUCTION Human schistosomiasis is a snail-borne disease caused by parasitic blood-dwelling flukes. A long-term infection can lead to the risk of liver damage, kidney failure, infertility, or bladder cancer. The most common sign is hematuria with the blood first seen in the terminal urine, but in severe cases the whole urine sample can be dark colored. We analyze the case of a healthy African child living in Italy since birth, harboring a hidden debilitating disease that was picked up during ultrasonography. CASE REPORT A 11-year-old African child was admitted to our emergency department with macroscopic hematuria, dysuria, and frequency for 2 months. Ultrasonography revealed a solid mass involving bladder's right wall. Non-contrast and contrast-enhanced scans of computerized tomography showed a mass of 45 mm x 15 mm on the right bladder wall. A bipolar transurethral resection of bladder was performed. The pathological examination showed findings consistent with Schistosoma haematobium. DISCUSSION The clinical manifestations of schistosomiasis depend on the inflammatory response to the parasitic infection. In particular, it can manifest in the bladder as painless dysuria, urinary incontinence and urinary frequency, hematuria, or even urinary retention if the trigone is involved. Utilization of ultrasonography for diagnostic evaluation of schistosomiasis is mandatory. For treatment, the World Health Organization recommends praziquantel which has an efficacy of up to 90%.The temporal super-resolution of the dynamic ultrasound imaging, a means to observe rapid heart movements, is considered an important subject in medical diagnosis of cardiac conditions. Here, a new technique based on the acquisition scheme using the matrix completion (MC) theory is offered for the temporal super-resolution of the two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound imaging. MC mentions the problem of completing a low-rank matrix when only a subset of its elements can be observed. Here, the lower scan lines are acquired. Whereby, the proposed method uses temporal and spatial information of the radio frequency (RF) image sequences for the reconstruction of skipped RF lines. This is performed using the construction of the MC images and then reconstruction of them by the MC theory. The results of the proposed method are compared with the compressive sensing (CS) reconstruction methods. The qualitative and quantitative evaluations of 2D and 3D data demonstrate that in the proposed method, which uses the spatial and temporal relation of RF images and the MC theory, the reconstruction is more accurate, and the reconstruction error is lower. The computational complexity of this method is very low. It also does not require hardware adjustments. Therefore, it can be easily implemented in current ultrasound-imaging devices with the frame-rate enhancement. For instance, the frame rate up to two times the original sequence is feasible using the proposed methods, while root mean square error is decreased by about 35% and 30% for 2D and 3D data, respectively, compared with the CS reconstruction method.Emerging pollutants have been the subject of worldwide study because their continuous entry into the environment presents a risk to ecosystems and human health. Advanced oxidation processes show promise for eliminating or reducing the concentrations of emerging pollutants in water. This study aimed to investigate the treatment of aqueous systems containing the synthetic hormone 17α-ethinylestradiol. An innovative method for persulfate activation catalysed by iron-modified diatomite (heterogeneous system) was compared to conventional homogeneous activation methods (iron activation, alkaline activation, and heat activation). Iron-modified diatomite was more efficient in activating persulfate than traditional processes, achieving 98% of pollutant removal. Molnupiravir supplier Experimental results indicated that the catalyst can be reused without loss of removal efficiency, with potential environmental and economic benefits.Contribution of emotional valence and arousal to attentional processing over time is not fully understood. We employed a rapid serial visual paradigm (RSVP) in three experiments to investigate the role of valence and arousal. In three experiments, participants had to identify the expression of the two targets (experiment 1 - happy and angry; experiment 2 - angry and surprise; experiment 3 - happy and surprise) presented among neutral upright face distracters. In the first and third experiments, the two targets differed both in valence and arousal ratings. In experiment 2, the surprise and angry expressions differed in terms of valence but were matched for arousal. There was a happy expression advantage (lesser attentional blink) when the first target was anger (experiment 1) or surprise (experiment 3) and a surprise expression advantage when the first target was anger (experiment 2). There was a backward blink with reduced detection of the first target primarily by the relatively more positive valence second target. These results indicate that the benefit for happy and surprise expressions in comparison to angry expression identification is probably due to valence (more positive) and not arousal. Our results demonstrate a novel dynamic interplay of emotional information on temporal attention.Older individuals with sexual/gender minority and minority racial/ethnic identities typically face unique challenges, along with opportunities to overcome these obstacles. Published studies on the difficulties faced by sexual and gender minorities are available; however, research on older adults with both racial/ethnic minority and sexual and gender minority identities is rarer. These individuals must confront various forms of discrimination related to ageism, homophobia and racism. Resilience likely plays a role in the ability to manage and survive multiple challenges and discriminatory experiences, yet targeted research on these populations is lacking. This paper offers a preliminary model that incorporates prevalent threats to these populations' well-being and their deleterious psychosocial correlates, especially, whenever available, the unique challenges that older individuals must face when age, sexual orientation and race/ethnicity intersect. Recommendations are made to optimise the expansion and empirical testing of this preliminary model.
