The formation of tactile perception is related to skin receptors and the cerebral cortex. In order to systematically study the tactile perception from finger friction to the brain response, a 32-channel Brain Products system and two tri-axial force sensors were used to obtain electroencephalograph (EEG) and friction signals during fingers exploring grating surfaces. A finite element finger model was established to analyze the stress changes of the skin receptors during tactile perception. Samples with different grating widths and spaces were chosen. The results indicated that different gratings induced different stress concentrations within skin that stimulated Meissner and Merkel receptors. Skin friction was affected by gratings during the tactile perception. It was also found that P300 evoked by gratings was related with the skin deformation, contact area, friction force, and stress around cutaneous mechanoreceptors. The wider grating width generated larger skin deformation, friction force, and stress, which induced stronger tactile stimulation. The smaller grating spacing generated higher vibration frequency, inducing stronger tactile stimulation. The latency of the P300 peak was related to the difference between the textured target stimulus and the smooth non-target stimulus. This study proofed that there was a relationship between the activation in brain regions, surface friction, and contact conditions of skin during the tactile perception. It contributes to understanding the formation process and cognitive mechanism of tactile perception of different surface textures. © 2019 The Authors. A Thai boy with features of osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) and combined pituitary hormone deficiency (CPHD) was identified. The causative mutations were investigated by whole exome and Sanger sequencing. Pathogenicity and pathomechanism of the variants were studied by luciferase assay. The proband was found to harbor a novel de novo heterozygous missense mutation, c.1531G > T (p.G511C), in COL1A2 leading to OI and a heterozygous missense variant, c.364C > T (p.R122W), in LHX4. The LHX4 p.R122W has never been reported to cause CPHD. The variant was predicted to be deleterious and found in the highly conserved LIM2 domain of LHX4. The luciferase assays revealed that the p.R122W was unable to activate POU1F1, GH1, and TSHB promoters, validating its pathogenic effect in CPHD. Moreover, the variant did not alter the function of wild-type LHX4, indicating its hypomorphic pathomechanism. In conclusion, the novel de novo heterozygous p.G511C mutation in COL1A2 and the heterozygous pathogenic p.R122W mutation in LHX4 were demonstrated in a patient with OI and CPHD. This study proposes that the mutations in two different genes should be sought in the patients with clinical features unable to be explained by a mutation in one gene. © 2019 The Authors. Comparison with experimental data is conducted to validate the usage of numerical simulations which enable investigation of great number of trash-rack configurations. In previous experimental studies researchers mostly focused on trash-rack parameters (bar spacing, bar length, inclinations etc.) where bar cross section was mainly rectangular or streamlined shape. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/Aurora-A-Inhibitor-I.html Therefore, 2D simulations for different cross sections are carried out for a range of trash-rack configurations in order to provide better insight how it affects energy losses. It is shown that head loss reduction due to change in cross section is greatly dependent on trash-rack configuration, therefore optimization of simplified real water turbine trash-rack is also conducted to produce the cross section that generates smallest head losses for given configuration. © 2019 The Authors. Fibroblast activation protein-α (FAP) is one of the proteins expressed by CAF and its immunohistochemical detection in routine practice is associated with tumor aggressiveness and shorter patient survival. For these reasons, FAP seems a good prognostic marker in many malignant neoplasms, including renal cell carcinoma (RCC). The start point of this Perspective paper is to review the role of CAF in the modulation of renal cell carcinoma evolution. In this sense, CAF have demonstrated to develop important protumor and/or antitumor activities. This apparent paradox suggests that some type of temporally or spatially-related specialization is present in this cellular compartment during tumor evolution. The end point is to remark that tumor/non-tumor cell interactions, in particular the symbiotic tumor/CAF connections, are permanent and ever-changing crucial phenomena along tumor lifetime. Interestingly, these interactions may be responsible of many therapeutic failures. © 2019 The Authors. Antibiotic treatment of bone infections leads to problems such as bacterial resistance and reduced osteogenic capacity. In this study, dopamine (DA) was self-polymerized on the surface of Polylactic acid (PLLA)/Hydroxyapatite (HA) nanowire composite fibers to form an adhesive polydopamine (PDA) membrane, and a stable silver-nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) coating layer was constructed on it by electrochemically driven Ag+ coordination and chelation through Polypyrrole (PPy) mediation, achieving steady and slow release of Ag-NPs. With optimized DA soaking time of 24 h and soaking concentration of 0.5 g·L-1, nanoparticles were uniformly distributed on PLLA/HA/PDA/PPy/Ag composite fibers and the hydrophilicity of the composite fibers was well-behaved. Besides, the composite fibers possessed good physiological stability and 100% antibacterial rate against Escherichia coli (E. coli) as well as Staphylococcus aureus (S.
