Psychological distress did not predict sleep duration, in contrast. Our analyses suggest that sleep duration in this sample of New Zealanders precedes psychological distress. This is significant given the propensity for short sleep in this sample and issues of poor mental health and short sleep among low SES indigenous members of this community. The promotion of adequate sleep duration may yield positive gains in psychological well-being.Our analyses suggest that sleep duration in this sample of New Zealanders precedes psychological distress. The promotion of adequate sleep duration may yield positive gains in psychological well-being. Snoring is often used as a surrogate measure for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a sleep disorder associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Whether snoring is linked to CVD independent of OSA remains unclear. We aimed to explore the snoring and subclinical CVD association in adults with and without OSA. We conducted a cross-sectional study in 122 overweight/obese participants (24% male; mean age 40.1 years) attending the 24-month follow-up visit of a lifestyle intervention. Using home-based objective measures of sleep-disordered breathing, we stratified participants into 3 snoring/OSA categories using the snoring index (SI), a measure of snoring vibration, and oxygen desaturation index (ODI) (1) OSA (ODI ≥ 5), (2) non-OSA heavy snorer (ODI <5, above-median SI), and (3) non-OSA low snorer (ODI <5, below-median SI). Vascular measures including pulse wave velocity ([PWV]; carotid-femoral [cf], femoral-ankle [fa], brachial-ankle [ba]), carotid intima-media thickness (IMT), and carotid interadventitial diameter (IAD) were compared across snoring/OSA categories. Linear regressions assessed the association between snoring and subclinical CVD independent of traditional CVD risk factors. Compared to non-OSA low snorers, common carotid IMT and IAD were higher in non-OSA heavy snorers, and faPWV, IMT, and IAD were higher among those with OSA. The difference between non-OSA heavy snorers and low snorers persisted after adjusting for age, race, sex, blood pressure, body mass index, lipids, and insulin resistance (P < .05 for IMT and IAD). In overweight/obese young to middle-aged adults, objectively measured snoring was related to vascular remodeling in those without OSA. Snoring may contribute to CVD risk but warrants further examination in larger prospective cohorts. In overweight/obese young to middle-aged adults, objectively measured snoring was related to vascular remodeling in those without OSA. We also highlight the role of sensitive periods in this interaction, focusing on domestic chicks as one of the main animal models for this field. In the first section of the review, we focus on the emergence of early predispositions to attend to social partners. These attentional biases appear before any learning experience about social stimuli. However, non-specific experiences occurring during sensitive periods of the early post-natal life determine the emergence of these predisposed mechanisms for the detection of social partners. Social predispositions have an important role for the development learning-based social cognitive functions, showing the interdependence of predisposed and learned mechanisms in shaping social development. Actinomycin D concentration In the second part of the review we concentrate on the reciprocal interactions between filial imprinting and spontaneous (not learned) social predispositions. Reciprocal influences between these two sets of mechanisms ensure that, in the natural environment, filial imprinting will target appropriate social objects. Neural and physiological mechanisms regulating the sensitive periods for the emergence of social predispositions and for filial imprinting learning are also described.Surgery is the ultimate curative treatment for resectable non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, the prognosis for operated patients remains disappointing. Multiple randomized studies have shown that administering perioperative chemotherapy improves the prognosis and increases the cure rate by around 3-5%. The purpose of this article is to take stock of the role of perioperative treatments for NSCLC, which can be completely resected. Six questions were evaluated 1) What is the place of (neo) adjuvant chemotherapy in 2020, among others in the early stages (IB)? 2) Can new chemotherapy agents be combined with a platinum derivative? 3) What is the place of radiochemotherapy for resectable NSCLC? 4) Is there a place for postoperative radiotherapy (PORT)? 5) Is there a place for targeted therapies for resectable NSCLC? 6) What is the place of immunotherapies in the perioperative period? Objectives In this study, we tested the use of ecigarette, cigarette, and dual use of both as predictors of heat-not-burn (HNB) tobacco product use onset among young adults, and examined common predictors of smoking cessation as predictors of HNB product use. Methods We collected data from 2229 young adults [mean age = 21.1 (SD = 2.1); 55% women] in Hawaii, at 2 time-points 6 months apart. Results Current cigarette-only use was the strongest concurrent predictor of HNB product use, followed by dual use, and ecigarette-only use. Among HNB product never users at Wave 1, dual and ecigarette-only use at Wave 1 significantly predicted HNB product use onset at Wave 2. Among cigarette smokers who had never used an HNB product at Wave 1, current use of ecigarette for help with smoking cessation predicted increased odds of HNB product use at 6-month follow-up. Conclusions Although promoted as a safer alternative for exclusive cigarette smokers, HNB products may increase the risk of dual or poly-tobacco product use among young adults, including current exclusive e-cigarette users.
