Here, we examined whether this might be due (in part) to the fact that tests help learners stay on task during the review stages of learning. In two experiments, participants encoded a list of words and later had an opportunity to review the material via a free recall test or re-reading the words. During review, participants provided self-reports as to whether their minds were on or off task. Results from both experiments show testing decreased mind-wandering. Importantly, this reduction in mind-wandering was associated with improved performance on a final memory test. These results suggest the mnemonic benefits associated with testing may stem not only from act of retrieval itself, but also from the fact that taking tests encourages a more efficient and engaged review of the material.Vicarious embarrassment as a social pain emotion has been studied from cognitive and neuroimaging perspectives. However, the dynamic time course of vicarious embarrassment remains unclear. We conducted an event-related potential (ERP) study to investigate the temporal dynamics of vicarious embarrassment and examine the role of perspective-taking in an emotional judgment task. The ERP results showed that vicarious embarrassment evoked more negative MFN (250-310 ms) and N400 (400-520 ms) components than the neutral condition over the frontal region. The time-frequency analysis results showed that, in the 200-1,600 ms time window, greater alpha power was elicited when participants imagined themselves rather than others in an awkward situation; in the 500-1,900 ms time window, for both groups, vicarious embarrassment involved greater theta oscillations than the neutral condition over the frontal region. These results extend previous findings that vicarious emotion involves mentalizing processes, and demonstrate that people first detect and evaluate the target's misconduct and negative outcomes and then experience the vicarious embarrassment.Background and Purpose. The use of virtual reality (VR) therapy among individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) is a relatively new rehabilitation approach replicating real-life scenarios. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of VR therapy for improving gait and balance in individuals with SCI. Methods. Databases of PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, SportDiscuss, and CINHAL were searched from inception until September 2019. Two independent reviewers screened articles for inclusion, extracted data, and evaluated methodological quality of the trials. Results. Ten trials, including 3 randomized clinical trials (RCTs) and 7 pre-post trials, with a total of 149 participants were analyzed. Meta-analysis of RCTs demonstrated significant improvement in sitting balance (standardized mean difference [SMD] = 1.65; 95% CI 1.21-2.09; P less then .01) after VR therapy with conventional rehabilitation compared with only conventional rehabilitation. Also, pre-post studies using VR therapy without a control group showed improvement in standing balance (Berg Balance Scale, MD = 4.22; 95% CI 1.78-6.66; P less then .01 and Activities-specific Balance Confidence scale, MD = 8.53; 95% CI 2.52-14.53; P = .01) and a trend for improvement in gait (SMD = 0.34; 95% CI 0.02-0.66; P = .04). Conclusion. This study demonstrated the beneficial effects of VR therapy to enhance sitting and standing balance and showed a trend of gait improvement in individuals with SCI. This conclusion is based on mainly preliminary data and therefore, more RCTs are needed to confirm the effects of the use of VR in individuals with SCI.Extensive literature exists documenting the relationship between stress and cognition. Caregiving for an individual with Alzheimer's disease can be aunique and chronic stress experience due to the increasing dependency of the care-recipient as the disease progresses. The current study examines the relationship between stress and cognitive performance in 47 dementia caregivers compared to 47 noncaregiver control participants matched on age, gender, and education. Participants completed measures assessing stress (measured via the Perceived Stress Scale) and seven domains of cognition including episodic memory, working memory, executive functioning, attention, visuospatial processing, processing speed, and implicit memory. Results showed that caregivers had poorer performance than non-caregivers on certain measures of episodic memory, working memory, and executive functioning; while no significant differences were observed on measures of attention, visuospatial processing, processing speed, or implicit memory. In addition, when controlling for general stress, caregiver performance on measures of processing speed and visuospatial processing was also poorer than non-caregivers. By controlling for levels of general stress that may not be related to caregiving, these results show that differences in cognitive performance are unlikely to be explained by general stress alone.Introduction Biallelic mutations in neuraminidase 1 (NEU1) are associated with cherry-red spots. Whole genome sequencing contributes to eliminating pseudo-homozygous mutations when large-scale deletion of one allele in NEU1 and other genes occurs.Patients and methods Bilateral cherry-red spots in the macula were the only detectable sign in an 11-year-old girl with reduced visual acuity over the last two years. Targeted exome sequencing of genes for inherited eye diseases identified a homozygous c.544A>G (p.Ser182Gly) variation in the NEU1 gene. This variant was also present in her mother in the heterozygous state but not in her father. Whole genome sequencing identified a heterozygous 27.5 kb deletion involving the whole coding exons of NEU1 in her father. click here Sanger sequencing disclosed the breakpoint of the deletion. This heterozygous deletion was also detected in the patient, so the c.544A>G mutation should be heterozygous in the patient.Conclusion The results of this case remind us of the limitations of routine exome sequencing and the need to perform segregation studies and deletion/duplication analysis or WGS if parental studies do not support exome findings.
