Objective We assessed the acute effect of beetroot extract intake on cardiovascular and autonomic recovery subsequent to strength exercise.Methods This is a crossover, randomized, double-blind and placebo-controlled trial. We assessed 16 subjects but only 12 healthy male adults completed the two protocols in two randomized days Beetroot extract (600 mg in capsule) and placebo (600 mg starch in capsule). Beetroot extract or placebo was ingested, the subjects endured 120 minutes seated at rest, followed by a 75% 1RM strength exercise and then remained seated for 60 minutes at rest. Cardiorespiratory parameters, heart rate (HR) variability (HRV) (SDNN, rMSSD, pNN50, SD1, SD2 HF [ms2]) were estimated before, during exercise and during recovery from exercise.Results ingestion of beetroot extract before exercise accelerates the recovery of SBP following physical effort; improves HR recovery to baseline resting levels (beetroot protocol change in ∼62% vs. placebo protocol change in ∼80%), and intensifies the return of vagal HR control during recovery after exercise.Conclusions Beetroot extract acutely improved cardiovascular and autonomic recovery after exercise.Background Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that severely impairs patients' quality of life (QoL). Instruments such as the 10-item Dermatology Life Quality Index and 16-item Skindex-16 have been used to assess QoL in HS; however, it is unknown whether the shorter 3-item Skindex-mini can also provide an accurate assessment of skin-related QoL in patients with HS. Objectives The aim was to assess how well the Skindex-16 correlates with its shorter adaptation, the Skindex-mini, in capturing QoL among patients with HS. Methods This retrospective cross-sectional study included all HS patients seen in the HS Clinic at The Emory Clinic between January 1, 2019, and August 16, 2019. We compared the correlation between the symptom, emotion, and function domains of the Skindex-16 and Skindex-mini using Pearson correlation coefficients (CC). Secondary outcome measures included individual survey item analysis, ItchyQuant scores, and numeric rating scale of pain. Results We identified 108 encounters among 75 unique hidradenitis suppurativa patients (43 black/African American, 18 white, 5 Asian/Pacific Islander, 3 Latino, 4 Other, 2 unknown). Pearson CC between the Skindex-16 and Skindex-mini domain scores for all encounters were 0.770 (P less then .001), 0.787 (P less then .001), and 0.801 (P less then .001) for the symptom, emotion, and function domains, respectively. The mean pain and ItchyQuant scores were 4.14 (SD 3.31) and 3.55 (SD 3.34), respectively. Conclusions The Skindex-mini correlated highly with the Skindex-16 in a racially diverse group of patients with HS. The Skindex-mini is a streamlined QoL instrument that could be practically implemented into routine clinical care among diverse patients presenting to dermatology.Purpose To report the presence of viral ribonucleic acid (RNA) of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in human retina in deceased patients with confirmed novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Patients and methods Fourteen eyes of 14 deceased patients with confirmed COVID-19 disease were enucleated during autopsy. A sample of human retina was secured and fixed in RNAlater™. Real-time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was performed to detect three different viral RNA sequences (RdRp-gene, E-gene and Orf1 gene) of SARS-CoV-2. Results In three out of 14 eyes SARS-CoV-2 viral RNA was detected in the retina of deceased COVID-19 patients. As analysis for three different sequences (RdRp-gene, E-gene and Orf1 gene) revealed positive results in RT-PCR, the existence of SARS-CoV-2 viral RNA in human retina is proven according to the standards of the World-Health-Organization. Conclusion Viral RNA of SARS-CoV-2 is detectable in the retina of COVID-19 patients.Purpose There are no clinical studies directly comparing anionic and cationic emulsions of cyclosporine for the treatment of dry eye disease (DED). We therefore conducted a literature review to evaluate the efficacy and safety of these different formulations. Methods A literature search was performed in Embase and Medline from January 1999 to May 2019 to identify publications that evaluated clinical outcomes with either cyclosporine anionic or cationic emulsion in patients with moderate-to-severe or severe DED. Results Thirteen publications met criteria. In patients with moderate-to-severe disease, evidence demonstrated improvement in the signs of DED with both formulations. However, improvement in symptoms was not consistently demonstrated. Studies specifically in severe DED were only identified with the cationic emulsion and showed improvement in the objective signs of DED. There were no obvious differences in tolerability between products.
