We present the first purely event-based method for face detection using the high temporal resolution properties of an event-based camera to detect the presence of a face in a scene using eye blinks. Eye blinks are a unique and stable natural dynamic temporal signature of human faces across population that can be fully captured by event-based sensors. We show that eye blinks have a unique temporal signature over time that can be easily detected by correlating the acquired local activity with a generic temporal model of eye blinks that has been generated from a wide population of users. In a second stage once a face has been located it becomes possible to apply a probabilistic framework to track its spatial location for each incoming event while using eye blinks to correct for drift and tracking errors. Results are shown for several indoor and outdoor experiments. We also release an annotated data set that can be used for future work on the topic.The effect of remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC) has been proposed that mediates the protective response in ischemia reperfusion injury (IRI) of various organs. In this study, we investigated the effect of RIPC in hepatic IRI, by assessing biomarker of oxidative stress and inflammatory cytokines. Moreover, we intended to demonstrate any such protective effect through nitric oxide (NO). Twenty-five rats were divided into the 5 groups (1) Sham; (2) RIPC; (3) hepatic IRI; (4) RIPC + hepatic IRI; (5) C-PTIO, 2-(4-carboxyphenyl)-4,5dihydro-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-1H-imidazolyl-1-oxy-3oxide, + RIPC + hepatic IRI. RIPC downregulated the level of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), histologic damage, and activity of Malondialdehyde (MDA). However, there was no significant reduction in the level of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB). AST and ALT levels, and hepatic tissue morphology in the C-PTIO group showed a significant improvement compared to those of the RIPC + hepatic IRI group. The application of RIPC before hepatic ischemia downregulated the oxidative stress, not the inflammatory cytokines. Students in an introductory neuroscience course read the popular press news article as well as an empirical article that identified risk factors for contracting meningococcal disease in college (Bruce et al., 2001). Students used information from the empirical article to identify Krystle's risk factors for meningitis. Then, students evaluated their University's policy on students receiving the meningococcal vaccine based on what they had learned. This case supports two important goals of neuroscience education, 1) exposing students to primary scientific literature early in their undergraduate education and 2) developing an understanding of the broader implications of scientific research for society. Students enjoyed learning about meningitis using the case-study method, reading the primary scientific article, and considering how scientific research can be applied to policy decisions. Further, the case was instrumental in supporting the content and process learning objectives.Undergraduate neuroscience education has grown substantially in the US as well as participation in outreach and research activities by undergraduates. In line with these observations, undergraduates may also be seeking membership in the Society for Neuroscience (SfN) as well as attending the SfN annual meeting.
