Vascular calcification refers to the pathological deposition of calcium and phosphate minerals into the vasculature. It is prevalent in atherosclerosis, ageing, type 2 diabetes mellitus and chronic kidney disease, thus, increasing morbidity and mortality from these conditions. Vascular calcification shares similar mechanisms with bone mineralization, with smooth muscle cells playing a critical role in both processes. In the last decade, a variety of microRNAs have been identified as key regulators for the differentiation, phenotypic switch, proliferation, apoptosis, cytokine production and matrix deposition in vascular smooth muscle cells during vascular calcification. Therefore, this review mainly discusses the roles of microRNAs in the pathophysiological mechanisms of vascular calcification in smooth muscle cells and describes several interventions against vascular calcification by regulating microRNAs. As the exact mechanisms of calcification remain not fully elucidated, having a better understanding of microRNA involvement in vascular calcification may give impetus to development of novel therapeutics for the control and treatment of vascular calcification.Preeclampsia (PE) is a major cause of perinatal and maternal mortality and morbidity, which affects 2% to 8% of pregnancies in the world. The aberrant maternal inflammation and angiogenic imbalance have been demonstrated to contribute to the pathogenesis of PE. This research aimed to investigate the effect of Astragaloside IV (AsIV) in the treatment of PE and the underlying mechanisms. selleckchem A rat PE-like model was established by tail vein injection of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and different doses of AsIV (40 and 80 mg/kg) were treated at the same time. Systolic blood pressure, total urine protein and urine volume were observed. Serum and placenta inflammatory cytokines were measured by ELISA kit. The mRNA and protein expression of relative genes were analyzed by qRT-PCR and Western blotting. In PE-like rats, there were obvious increases in systolic blood pressure, total urine protein and urine volume, which were obviously alleviated by treatment with AsIV. Serum levels of interleukin (IL)-1β, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), IL-6 and IL-18, as well as IL-4, IL-10, PIGF, VEGF and sFlt-1, were all reversed by treatment with AsIV. Meanwhile, AsIV treatment improved abnormal pregnancy outcomes, such as low litter size and low fetal weight. In addition, AsIV treatment downregulated the mRNA expression of inflammatory gene IL-1β and IL-6 in PE rats model, and AsIV treatment inhibited the activation of TLR-4, NF-κB, and sFlt-1 in the placenta of PE rats. Our findings indicated the first evidence that AsIV alleviated PE-like signs, and this improvement effect is possibly through inhibition of inflammation response via the TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway. In this work, a series of gold-supported titanium oxide composites have been prepared and high selectivity (over 90%) of hydrogen peroxide is achieved. For the first time, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and electron spin resonance analysis demonstrate that high charge transfer impedance of the catalyst can suppress the decomposition of OOH* intermediates thus promoting the two-electron process of the oxygen reduction reaction. Facial puffiness, caused by mild or normal fluid retention, commonly experienced by women, may not pose a health risk, but it can be a cause of cosmetic concern. The objectives of this study were to determine whether self-perceived facial puffiness can be measured objectively. A total of 151 Chinese women between 20 and 68years of age were recruited. Facial water content, skin thickness, and elasticity were measured at two time points within a day (visit one occurred when the participants perceived they had facial puffiness; visit two occurred when the participants perceived their facial puffiness had subsided). Participants were also given a rating scale to self-evaluate their puffiness and firmness at different regions of the face. The participants could perceive a difference in facial puffiness between the two visits. Water content and skin thickness were significantly higher in all regions of the face for all participants during the first visit. Skin elasticity was also significantly different between visits one and two. There was a significant increase in water content and skin thickness in the lower eyelid region in women who were older than 40years. This is the first study to show that self-perceived facial puffiness can be measured objectively and that skin elasticity can change significantly when facial puffiness subsides. This is the first study to show that self-perceived facial puffiness can be measured objectively and that skin elasticity can change significantly when facial puffiness subsides. Controversy exists regarding the optimal management of colorectal lung metastases (CRLM). This meta-analysis compared surgical (Surg) versus interventional (chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy) and observational non-surgical (NSurg) management of CRLM. A systematic review of the major databases including Medline, Embase, SCOPUS and the Cochrane library was performed. One randomized and nine observational studies including 2232 patients 1551 (69%) comprised the Surg cohort, 521 (23%) the interventional NSurg group and 160 (7%) the observational NSurg group. A significantly higher overall survival (OS) was observed when Surg was compared to interventional NSurg at 1 year (Surg 88%, 310/352; interventional NSurg 64%, 245/383; odds ratio (OR) 2.77 (confidence interval (CI) 1.94-3.97), P = 0.001), at 3 years (Surg 59%, 857/1444; interventional NSurg 26%, 138/521; OR 2.61 (CI 1.65-4.15), P = 0.002), at 5 years (Surg 47%, 533/1144; interventional NSurg 23%, 45/196; OR 3.24 (CI 1.42-7.39), P = 0.009) and at 10 yeacontrolled trials and registry data.Postischemic acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common clinical complication and often fatal, with no effective treatment available. Little is known about the role of leukocytes trapped in renal vessels during ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) in the postischemic AKI. We designed a new animal model in rats with preforming renal artery lavage prior to IRI to investigate the effect of diminishing the residual circulating leukocytes on kidney damage and inflammation. Moreover, the functional changes of macrophages in hypoxia reoxygenation condition were also analyzed. We found pre-ischemic renal lavage significantly decreased the serum creatinine and blood urea nitrogen levels, and downregulated the mRNA and protein expressions in kidneys and urinary secretion of kidney injury molecule-1 of rats after IRI. The renal pathological damage caused by IRI was also ameliorated by pre-ischemic renal lavage, as evidenced by fewer cast formation, diminished morphological signs of AKI in the tissue at 24 hours after IRI. Pre-ischemic renal lavage reduced the numbers of infiltrating CD68+ macrophages and MPO+ neutrophils.
