Background The main purpose of this study was to assess possible modifications of cognitive performance among schizophrenia patients treated with long-acting injectable antipsychotics (LAIs) of second generation anti-psychotics (SGAs). Our hypothesis is that the shift from the oral formulation to the LAI formulation of SGAs drugs improves the cognitive performance. The secondary objective was to carry out a head to head comparison of two different SGA-LAI treatments [i.e., 1-month Paliperidone Palmitate (PP1M), monthly Aripiprazole (Ari-LAI)] in our study with an independent and real-world setting.Methods The sample comprised 32 participants who were consecutively recruited over 12 months. Seventeen patients treated with Ari-LAI and 10 treated with PP1M completed psychopathological, neuropsychological and functional assessments. Group differences were explored through chi-squared and t-tests, as appropriate. GLM Repeated Measures were used to study variations of cognitive performance along 12 months and to tecial and cognitive improvements in patients who had already benefitted from oral SGA therapy.Aim This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to analyze the association between cripto-1 expression and prognosis as well as clinicopathological features of non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. Methods The electronic databases for all articles about NSCLC and cripto-1 expression were searched. Results Twelve articles were enrolled in this meta-analysis (3130 samples). In NSCLC patients, cripto-1 was expressed higher than in normal tissues. Cripto-1 expression was closely correlated with lymph node metastasis, histological differentiation and advanced clinical stage of NSCLC patients, but not related to smoking, age and gender. Pooled hazard ratios found that high cripto-1 expression had poor overall survival and progression-free survival. Conclusion Cripto-1 could serve as a novel biomarker for predicting poor prognosis in NSCLC patients.OBJECTIVE To determine the effect of alveolar decortication on orthodontically induced root resorption. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 24 male Wistar rats (14 week old) were used. The rats were randomly divided into one of the following three groups group 1 (control group), orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) for 2 weeks; group 2, OTM for 2 weeks + two alveolar decortications (2AD); group 3, OTM for 2 weeks + four alveolar decortications (4AD). The first molar was moved mesially for 2 weeks. Micro computed tomography was used to analyze root volume. In addition, histological sections were stained with Tartrate Resistant Acid Phosphatase (TRAP) to quantify the osteoclast number. RESULTS The buccal root volume in OTM + 4AD group was decreased by 8.92% and 6.11% when compared with the OTM-only group and OTM + 2AD group, respectively. Similarly, the other four root volumes in the OTM + 4AD group was decreased by 8.99% and 5.24% when compared with the OTM-only group and OTM + 2AD group, respectively. There was a decrease in buccal root density in the OTM + 4AD group by 4.66% and 3.56% when compared with the OTM-only group and the OTM + 2AD group, respectively. In addition, there was an increase in the number of osteoclasts by 195.73% and 98.74% in OTM + 4AD group in comparison with the OTM and OTM + 2AD group. CONCLUSIONS The amount of orthodontically induced root resorption was positively correlated with the extent of surgical injury used to accelerate orthodontic tooth movement.OBJECTIVES To determine three-dimensional treatment changes produced by the Class II Carriere Motion appliance (CMA) in Class II adolescent patients with Class I and Class II skeletal relationships. MATERIALS AND METHODS The sample included 59 adolescents (16 boys and 43 girls) with unilateral or bilateral Class II molar and bilateral Class II canine relationship. They were divided into group 1 with skeletal Class I (N = 27; ANB 2.90° ± 1.40°; 13.30 ± 1.53 years) and group 2 with skeletal Class II (N = 32; ANB 6.06° ± 1.64°; 13.26 ± 1.76 years). Cone beam computed tomography images were traced with Invivo software pretreatment (T1) and post-CMA usage (T2). The treatment changes in 36 measurements were calculated in each group, and the changes in 16 measurements were compared between them. RESULTS In group 1 and 2, maxillary first molars underwent significant distal movement (1.92 mm ± 0.80 mm and 1.67 mm ± 1.56 mm, respectively) with distal tipping and rotation, maxillary canines underwent significant distal movement (2.34 mm ± 1.07 mm and 2.24 mm ± 1.91 mm, respectively) with distal tipping and rotation, and mandibular molars underwent significant mesial movement (-1.37 mm ± 1.23 mm and -2.51 mm ± 1.51 mm, respectively) with mesial tipping. Between the groups, there were significant differences in mandibular molar mesial movement and the U1-SN changes (P less then .05). CONCLUSIONS The CMA corrected Class II malocclusion through distal tipping and rotational movement of maxillary canines and molars and corrected mesial tipping of mandibular molars. Significantly more mandibular molar mesial movement and maxillary incisor flaring were observed in patients with skeletal Class II.OBJECTIVES To assess the effectiveness of bone-anchored maxillary protraction (BAMP) in patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) and whether it was enhanced when preceded by maxillary expansion. MATERIALS AND METHODS The sample consisted of 28 growing children (9-13 years old) with UCLP and Class III malocclusion. selleck They were divided into two equal groups. In group I, patients were treated with BAMP not preceded by maxillary expansion. In group II, patients were treated with BAMP preceded by maxillary expansion. To assess treatment changes in three dimensions, Cone-beam computed tomography images were taken 1 week after surgical placement of the miniplates (T1) and after 9 months of treatment (T2). RESULTS BAMP produced forward movement of the maxilla in both groups (3.17 mm) and (3.37 mm) respectively, without significant differences between the two groups except for clockwise rotation of the palatal plane in group I (1.60). CONCLUSIONS BAMP is an effective treatment modality for correcting midface deficiency in patients with UCLP whether or not maxillary expansion was carried out.
