Thorough drying of flexible endoscope channels has been identified as an essential reprocessing step. Yet, instructions are not specific on how to dry endoscopes. There is lack of data supporting efficacy of current drying practices, due to limitations in determining channel dryness. Novel endoscope test articles were used to evaluate the effectiveness of alcohol flush and hanging in an ambient endoscope storage cabinet. Prepared test articles were hung in a storage cabinet for 5 days and visually inspected for residual liquid. The procedure for preoperative inspection of endoscopic systems was performed to determine the procedure's efficacy for removing residual liquid. Then, testing was performed to assess the impact of pressure, residual liquid type and route of air application on time to dry using compressed air. Alcohol flush followed by hanging in an ambient storage cabinet was not effective for drying endoscope channels, and residual liquid was not completely removed after performing the steps of the preoperative inspection of endoscopic channels. The factors impacting effective compressed air drying were channel dependent. For some channels, alcohol increased the time to dry. Isolation and quarantine are key measures in outbreak management and disease control. They are, however, associated with negative patient experiences and outcomes, including an adverse impact on mental health and lower quality of care due to limited interaction with healthcare workers. In this study, we explore the lived experience and perceptions of patients in isolation with COVID-19 in an Australian healthcare setting. Using a phenomenological approach from a Heideggerian hermeneutical perspective, we conducted individual semistructured interviews with the first 11 COVID-19 patients admitted to a designated COVID-19 facility in Australia. Interviews were audiorecorded, transcribed verbatim, and imported into NVivo 12 for coding and analysis. Participants' lived experience and perceptions of COVID-19 were represented by 5 themes "Knowing about COVID-19," "Planning for, and responding to, COVID-19," "Being infected," "Life in isolation and the room," and "Post-discharge life." Within these, participants conveyed both positive and negative lived experiences of infection, isolation, and illness. The contextual aspects of their social and physical environment together with their individual resources contributed to the framing of their planning for, and response to, the outbreak, and were important mediators in their experience. The objective of this study was to develop a comprehensive prediction model applying a machine learning algorithm allowing selection of the most predictive risk factors automatically. Two population-based cohort studies. The Rotterdam Study I (RS-I; training set) included 3838 participants 55 years of age or older, with a median follow-up period of 10.8 years, and 108 incident cases of advanced AMD. The Antioxydants, Lipids Essentiels, Nutrition et Maladies Oculaires (ALIENOR) study (test set) included 362 participants 73 years of age or older, with a median follow-up period of 6.5 years, and 33 incident cases of advanced AMD. The prediction model used the bootstrap least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) method for survival analysis to select the best predictors of incident advanced AMD in the training set. We evaluated the impact of a virtual radiation oncology clerkship. We developed a 2-week virtual radiation oncology clerkship that launched on April 27, 2020. Clerkship components included a virtual clinic with radiation oncology faculty and residents, didactic lectures, student talks, and supplemental sessions such as tumor boards and chart rounds. Medical students completed pre- and post-clerkship self-assessments. Faculty and resident participants also completed surveys on their experience with virtual lectures and clinics. Pre- and post-clerkship results were compared using a 2-sided paired t test. An analysis of variance model was used to analyze the clerkship components. Twenty-six medical students, including 4 visiting students, enrolled over 2 clerkship periods (4 weeks). All students completed the pre- and post-clerkship self-assessments and agreed that the clerkship improved their understanding of radiation oncology.
