Blood flows in microcirculation are determined by the mechanical properties of blood samples, which have been used to screen the status or progress of diseases. To achieve this, it is necessary to measure the viscoelasticity of blood samples under a pulsatile blood condition. In this study, viscoelasticity measurement is demonstrated by quantifying interface variations in coflowing streams. To demonstrate the present method, a T-shaped microfluidic device is designed to have two inlets (a, b), one outlet (a), two guiding channels (blood sample channel, reference fluid channel), and one coflowing channel. Two syringe pumps are employed to infuse a blood sample at a sinusoidal flow rate. The reference fluid is supplied at a constant flow rate. Using a discrete fluidic circuit model, a first-order linear differential equation for the interface is derived by including two approximate factors (F1 = 1.094, F2 = 1.1087). The viscosity and compliance are derived analytically as viscoelasticity. The experimental results showed that compliance is influenced substantially by the period. The hematocrit and diluent contributed to the varying viscosity and compliance. The viscoelasticity varied substantially for red blood cells fixed with higher concentrations of glutaraldehyde solution. The experimental results showed that the present method has the ability to monitor the viscoelasticity of blood samples under a sinusoidal flow-rate pattern.Photocatalytic water purification is important for the degradation of organic pollutants, attracting intensive interests. Photocatalysts are preferred to be immobilized on a substrate in order to reduce the laborious separation and recycling steps. To get uniform irradiation, the photocatalysts are preferred to be even/uniform on the substrate without aggregation. D-Luciferin inhibitor Generally, the "coffee ring effect" occurs on the substrate during solvent evaporation, unfortunately resulting in the aggregation of the photocatalysts. This aggregation inevitably blocks the exposure of active sites, reactant exchange, and light absorption. Here, we reported a paper-based photocatalyst immobilization method to solve the "coffee ring" problem. We also used a "drop reactor" to achieve good photocatalytic efficiency with the advantages of large surface area, short diffusion lengths, simple operation, and uniform light absorption. Compared with the coffee ring type, the paper-based method showed higher water purification efficiency, indicating its potential application value in the future.Nowadays, in fiber optic communications the growing demand in terms of transmission capacity has been fulfilling the entire spectral band of the erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs). This dramatic increase in bandwidth rules out the use of EDFAs, leaving fiber Raman amplifiers (FRAs) as the key devices for future amplification requirements. On the other hand, in the field of high-power fiber lasers, a very attractive option is provided by fiber Raman lasers (FRLs), due to their high output power, high efficiency and broad gain bandwidth, covering almost the entire near-infrared region. This paper reviews the challenges, achievements and perspectives of both fiber Raman amplifier and fiber Raman laser. They are enabling technologies for implementation of high-capacity optical communication systems and for the realization of high power fiber lasers, respectively.Hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) was introduced to activate the surface of polyurethane (PU) sponge to successfully prepare a hydrophobic ternary composite PU/HEC/SiO2. The hydrophobic layer of the composite was realized by in-situ polymerization of methyltriethoxysilane (MTES) onto the surface of PU sponge. The formation of a stable hydrophobic SiO2 layer solved successfully the problem of ease of SiO2 particles shedding from the composite. Moreover, the amphiphilic molecules produced by the hydrolysis of MTES monomers facilitated the preparation of hydrophobic materials by aqueous dispersion polymerization. Aqueous synthesis made the reaction process environmentally-friendly and pollution-free. The as-prepared composite PU/HEC/SiO2 not only retains high porosity and low density of the PU sponge, but also considerably reduced the surface free energy and increased the surface roughness of the PU sponge. Therefore, outstanding hydrophobicity and high porosity endow the composite with excellent oil removal capability as a high-efficiency absorbent. Moreover, the hydrophobic composite that had absorbed oil could be regenerated easily by squeezing and recycling. It is thought that genetic variations play a vital role in the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) etiology. However, the role of genetic factors that influence the clinical features of MS remains unclear. We investigated the correlation between 21 single nucleotide polymorphisms within three genes (IL7R, LAG3, and CD40) and MS clinical characteristics in the Jordanian population. Blood samples and clinical phenotypic data were collected from 218 Arab Jordanian MS patients, vitamin D was measured, genomic DNA was extracted, and genotyping of the candidate genes' polymorphisms were analyzed using the Sequenom MassARRAY® system. The association of these single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with MS was performed using a Chi-square, Fisher exact test, and one-way ANOVA. We found a significant association between vitamin D deficiency and three SNPs of the IL7R gene, namely rs987107 (P-value = 0.047), rs3194051 (P-value = 0.03), and rs1494571 (P-value = 0.036), in addition to two SNPs of CD40, namely rs1883832 and rs6074022 (P-value = 0.049 for both). rs3194051 of the IL7R gene (P-value = 0.003) and rs1922452 of the LAG3 gene (P-value = 0.028) were strongly associated with comorbidity. The number of relapses before drug onset was found to be correlated with IL7R SNPs rs969128 (P-value = 0.04) and rs1494555 (P-value = 0.027), whereas the expanded disability status scale (EDSS) was associated with rs1494555 polymorphism of IL7R gene (P-value = 0.026). Current findings indicate important correlations between certain SNPs and the risk of various phenotypes of multiple sclerosis in the Jordanian community. Therefore, this will not only contribute to the understanding of MS, but will also assist with the development of personalized treatment procedures.
