In the last two decades, the use of diamond as a material for applications in nanophotonics, optomechanics, quantum information, and sensors tremendously increased due to its outstanding mechanical properties, wide optical transparency, and biocompatibility. This has been possible owing to advances in methods for growth of high-quality single crystal diamond (SCD), nanofabrication methods and controlled incorporation of optically active point defects (e.g., nitrogen vacancy centers) in SCD. this website This paper reviews the recent advances in SCD nano-structuring methods for realization of micro- and nano-structures. Novel fabrication methods are discussed and the different nano-structures realized for a wide range of applications are summarized. Moreover, the methods for color center incorporation in SCD and surface treatment methods to enhance their properties are described. Challenges in the upscaling of SCD nano-structure fabrication, their commercial applications and future prospects are discussed.Emotion recognition has drawn consistent attention from researchers recently. Although gesture modality plays an important role in expressing emotion, it is seldom considered in the field of emotion recognition. A key reason is the scarcity of labeled data containing 3D skeleton data. Some studies in action recognition have applied graph-based neural networks to explicitly model the spatial connection between joints. However, this method has not been considered in the field of gesture-based emotion recognition, so far. In this work, we applied a pose estimation based method to extract 3D skeleton coordinates for IEMOCAP database. We propose a self-attention enhanced spatial temporal graph convolutional network for skeleton-based emotion recognition, in which the spatial convolutional part models the skeletal structure of the body as a static graph, and the self-attention part dynamically constructs more connections between the joints and provides supplementary information. Our experiment demonstrates that the proposed model significantly outperforms other models and that the features of the extracted skeleton data improve the performance of multimodal emotion recognition.(1) Background Zinc is suggested to play a major role in epidermal growth factor (EGF)-induced cell regeneration and proliferation. To deepen the knowledge on the underlying mechanisms zinc's effects on the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) activation and its endocytosis was investigated in the alveolar carcinoma cell line A549. (2) Methods An increase of intracellular zinc was generated by adding zinc extracellularly compared to the intracellular release of zinc from zinc-binding proteins by stimulation with a nitric oxide donor. Zinc-initiated EGFR phosphorylation was checked by Western blotting and receptor endocytosis assays were performed by using flow cytometry. (3) Results Besides a dose-dependent EGFR phosphorylation, a dose- and time dependent significant receptor internalisation was initiated by both types of zinc increases. In addition, both increased intracellular zinc levels further promoted EGF-induced EGFR phosphorylation and internalisation. (4) Conclusion This report confirms a transactivating effect of zinc on the EGFR for A549 cells and is the first describing an influence of zinc on the EGFR endocytosis. The transferability of the fine-tuning of EGFR-induced signalling by zinc needs to be verified in vivo, but the presented data underline that zinc might be helpful during treatment of disturbed regeneration and tissue repair. We read the paper by Katsarelias et al. with great interest, regarding the effect of beta-adrenergic blocking agents on cutaneous melanoma [1]. However, the study presents some methodology biases that do not allow us to support the authors' conclusions. The paper suffers from the unification and evaluation of multiple registries, which do not provide essential data for any of the targets for research. Unlike studies in the literature [...].Dithiocarbamate fungicides (DTFs) are widely used to control various fungal diseases in crops and ornamental plants. Maximum residual limits in the order of ppb-ppm are currently imposed by legislation to prevent toxicity problems associated with excessive use of DTFs. The specific analytical determination of DTFs is complicated by their low solubility in water and organic solvents. This review summarizes the current analytical procedures used for the analysis of DTF, including chromatography, spectroscopy, and sensor-based methods and discusses the challenges related to selectivity, sensitivity, and sample preparation. Biosensors based on enzymatic inhibition demonstrated potential as analytical tools for DTFs and warrant further research, considering novel enzymes from extremophilic sources. Meanwhile, Raman spectroscopy and various sensors appear very promising, provided the selectivity issues are solved.Traditional plastics have undoubted utility and convenience for everyday life; but when they are derived from petroleum and are non-biodegradable, they contribute to two major crises today's world is facing fossil resources depletion and environmental degradation. Polyhydroxyalkanoates are a promising alternative to replace them, being biodegradable and suitable for a wide variety of applications. This biopolymer accumulates as energy and carbon storage material in various microorganisms, including microalgae. This study investigated the influence of glucose, N, P, Fe, and salinity over the production of polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) by Scenedesmus sp., a freshwater microalga strain not previously explored for this purpose. To assess the effect of the variables, a fractional Taguchi experimental design involving 16 experimental runs was planned and executed. Biopolymer was obtained in all the experiments in a wide range of concentrations (0.83-29.92%, w/w DW), and identified as polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) by FTIR analysis. The statistical analysis of the response was carried out using Minitab 16, where phosphorus, glucose, and iron were identified as significant factors, together with the P-Fe and glucose-N interactions. The presence of other relevant macromolecules was also quantified. Doing this, this work contributes to the understanding of the critical factors that control PHA production and present Scenedesmus sp. as a promising species to produce bio-resources in commercial systems.
