Identifying ecologically fragile areas by assessing ecosystem vulnerability is an essential task in environmental conservation and management. Benin is considered a vulnerable area, and its coastal zone, which is subject to erosion and flooding effects, is particularly vulnerable. This study assessed terrestrial ecosystems in Benin by establishing a hybrid ecological vulnerability index (EVI) for 2016 that combined a composite model based on principal component analysis (PCA) with an additive model based on exposure, sensitivity and adaptation. Using inverse distance weighted (IDW) interpolation, point data were spatially distributed by their geographic significance. The results revealed that the composite system identified more stable and vulnerable areas than the additive system; the two systems identified 48,600 km2 and 36,450 km2 of stable areas, respectively, for a difference of 12,150 km2, and 3,729 km2 and 3,007 km2 of vulnerable areas, for a difference of 722 km2. Using Moran's I and automatic linear modeling, we improved the accuracy of the established systems. In the composite system, increases of 11,669 km2 in the potentially vulnerable area and 1,083 km2 in the highly vulnerable area were noted in addition to a decrease of 4331 km2 in the potential area; while in the additive system, an increase of 3,970 km2 in the highly vulnerable area was observed. Finally, southern Benin was identified as vulnerable in the composite system, and both northern and southern Benin were identified as vulnerable in the additive system. However, regardless of the system, Littoral Province in southern Benin, was consistently identified as vulnerable, while Donga Province was stable.Population studies in Aotearoa New Zealand found higher bone mineral density and lower rate of hip fracture in people of Polynesian ancestry compared to Europeans. We hypothesised that differences in osteoblast proliferation and differentiation contribute to the differences in bone properties between the two groups. Osteoblasts were cultured from bone samples obtained from 30 people of Polynesian ancestry and 25 Europeans who had joint replacement surgeries for osteoarthritis. The fraction of cells in S-phase was determined by flow cytometry, and gene expression was analysed by microarray and real-time PCR. We found no differences in the fraction of osteoblasts in S-phase between the groups. Global gene expression analysis identified 79 differentially expressed genes (fold change > 2, FDR P less then 0.1). Analysis of selected genes by real-time PCR found higher expression of COL1A1 and KRT34 in Polynesians, whereas BGLAP, DKK1, NOV, CDH13, EFHD1 and EFNB2 were higher in Europeans (P ≤ 0.01). Osteoblasts from European donors had higher levels of late differentiation markers and genes encoding proteins that inhibit the Wnt signalling pathway. This variability may contribute to the differences in bone properties between people of Polynesian and European ancestry that had been determined in previous studies.Capping body surface area (BSA) at 2 m2 is a routine clinical practice. It aims at reducing toxicities in over 2 m2 BSA patients. 455,502 computerized chemotherapy prescriptions made between 2011 and 2017 were taken from BPC software. Chemotherapy computerized order entry is created by a senior physician prescribers before patient consultation. Only prescriptions with dose calculation involving BSA were selected. 51,179 chemotherapy prescriptions were analyzed; corresponding to 7206 patients who received intravenous chemotherapy. The number of chemotherapy prescriptions in over 2 m2 BSA patients was nearly the same in the hematology as in the oncology departments. But, 79.1% of prescriptions were capped at 2 m2 in the oncology department contrary to 21.9% in the hematology department. Practices analysis showed more dose limitation in palliative situations in both departments. Unexpectedly, 6.53% of capped prescriptions were performed in patients with normal BMI. The patients who received capped doses of chemotherapy had neither fewer dose reductions due to toxicity nor deterioration of their general condition. Capping did not induce fewer dose reductions in patients with BSA greater than 2 m2. Prospective studies in this population are needed to standardize chemotherapy administration in population with BSA > 2 m2.Arabidopsis REIL proteins are cytosolic ribosomal 60S-biogenesis factors. Reil1 reil2 double mutants accumulate 43S-preinitiation and pre-60S-maturation complexes and alter paralog composition of ribosomal proteins in non-translating complexes. With few exceptions, e.g. RPL3B and RPL24C, these changes are not under transcriptional control. We propose that Arabidopsis requires biosynthesis of specialized ribosomes for cold acclimation.A robust knowledge of biodiversity distribution is essential for designing and developing effective conservation actions. The choice of a suitable sampling method is key to obtaining sufficiently accurate information of species distribution and consequently to improve biodiversity conservation. This study applies multi-method occupancy models to 36 common bird species associated with small ponds in the province of Murcia (south-eastern Spain), one of the most arid regions of Europe, in order to compare their effectiveness for detecting different bird species direct observation, combined observation and video monitoring and mist netting captures. The results showed that the combined method and direct observation were similar and most effective than mist netting for detecting species occupancy, although detection rates ranged widely among bird groups, while some large species were poorly detected by all the methods used. Average detectability did not increase during the breeding period. The chosen approach is particularly applicable to both single- and multi-species bird monitoring programmes.
