Interestingly, upon mixing with the platinum(II) probes, polyelectrolytes with bottlebrush architectures have been found to exhibit larger spectroscopic changes than linear polyelectrolytes with the same chemical composition. Combined with the reported theoretical studies on counterion condensation of polyelectrolytes, the platinum(II) complexes are found to function as spectroscopic probes for sensing the charge densities of the polyelectrolytes with different lengths and diverse architectures. Moreover, platinum(II) probes pre-organized in nanostructured aggregates have been found to intercalate into double-stranded DNA, which are naturally occurring biological polyelectrolytes with helical architectures and intercalation sites, to give significant enhancement of spectroscopic changes when compared to the intercalation of monomeric platinum(II) probes into double-stranded DNA.The selective interplay between dimensional morphology transition and signal transfer is an important feature for both nanomaterials and biosystems. While most of those reported examples considered either dimensional transition or signal transfer, the integrated interplay or selectivity for these two aspects in single self-assembled system has been rarely studied. Here, we report that a positively charged chiral π-building block could self-assemble into multidimensional nanostructures, which showed tunable circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). Impressively, when these CPL-active multidimensional structures interacted with two achiral dyes (positively charged ThT and negatively charged CNA), 3D nanocubes and 0D nanospheres showed neither chirality transfer nor energy transfer, while 2D nanoplates could successfully trigger a selective chirality or energy transfer depending on the charge type of acceptor dyes, which then emitted an enhanced CPL signal. This work demonstrated rational design of charged π-building block for the construction of dimension controllable and selective signal transfer self-assembly system, which might deepen the understanding the interplay of dimensional structures and signal transfer functions in natural and nano systems.Burn infection is one of the commonest causes of death in severely burned patients. Developing multifunctional biological nanomaterials has a great significance for the comprehensive treatment of burn infection. In this paper, we developed a hydrogel-based nanodelivery system with antibacterial activity and skin regeneration function, which was used for photodynamic antimicrobial chemotherapy (PACT) in the treatment of burns. The treatment system is mainly composed of porphyrin photosensitizer sinoporphyrin sodium (DVDMS) and poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA)-encapsulated basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) nanospheres that are embedded in carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS)-sodium alginate to form CSDP hybrid hydrogel. We systematically evaluated the inherent antibacterial performance, rheological properties, fluorescence imaging, and biocompatibility of the CSDP nanosystem. Under mild photoirradiation (30 J/cm2, 5 min), 10 μg/mL CSDP showed excellent antibacterial and anti-biofilm activities, which eradicated almost 99.99% of Staphylococcus aureus and multidrug-resistant (MDR) S. aureus in vitro. KEGG analysis identified that multiple signaling pathways were changed in MDR S. aureus after PACT. In the burn-infection model, CSDP-PACT successfully inhibited bacteria growth and concurrently promoted wound healing. Moreover, several regenerative factors were increased and some proinflammatory factors were reduced in the burn wounds of CSDP hydrogel treatment. These results suggest that the multifunctional CSDP hydrogel is a portable, light-triggered, antibacterial theranostic-platform and CSDP-PACT provides a promising strategy or the mechanically based synergistic treatment of burn infections.PURPOSE The purpose of the paper is to explore how the national, state and organisational health policies in Australia support the implementation of person-centred care in managing chronic care conditions. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH A qualitative content analysis was performed regarding the national, state and organisational Queensland Health policies using Elo and Kyngas' (2008) framework. Complex funding structures and competing priorities of the governments and the health organisations carry the risk that person-centred care as an approach gets lost in translation. Three themes emerged the patient versus the government; health care delivery versus the political agenda; and health care organisational processes versus the patient. RESEARCH LIMITATIONS/IMPLICATIONS Given that person-centred care is the recommended approach for responding to chronic health conditions, further empirical research is required to evaluate how programs designed to deliver person-centred care achieve that objective in practice. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS This research highlights the complex environment in which the person-centred approach is implemented. Short-term programmes created specifically to focus on person-centred care require the right organisational infrastructure, support and direction. This review demonstrates the need for alignment of policies related to chronic disease management at the broader organisational level. ORIGINALITY/VALUE Given the introduction of the nurse navigator program to take up a person-centred care approach, the review of the recent policies was undertaken to understand how they support this initiative. © Emerald Publishing Limited.INTRODUCTION Lung clearance index (LCI) is a measure of airway disease that has been shown to be abnormal in asthma. We hypothesized that LCI would be higher (worse) in children with severe therapy-resistant asthma (STRA) compared with difficult asthma (DA) and healthy controls and that LCI would fall in response to parenteral steroids in STRA. METHODS Sixty-four children with asthma who were prescribed high-dose asthma therapy (GINA steps 4 or 5) performed LCI and spirometry. Forty-three had STRA and 21 DA. Thirty-nine of forty-three STRA patients attended for a clinically indicated bronchoscopy during which an intramuscular injection of triamcinolone was given. LCI, spirometry, and fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) were performed on the day of the bronchoscopy and repeated 4 weeks later. RESULTS LCI was more abnormal in STRA (median 7.40, range 5.58-12.34) than in DA (6.55, 5.77-7.75), P = .0006, and healthy controls (6.53, 5.57-7.35), P = .005. In contrast to the first second forced expired volume (FEV1 ), LCI improved following systemic steroids; of 20 STRA patients with an abnormal LCI at baseline, 13 improved following triamcinolone.
