Moreover, although physicians perceived discordance between their own and their patients' beliefs, data from the national sample suggested that these gaps were less substantial than physicians expected. In particular, findings showed that physicians generally overestimated discordance, expecting that people would be less likely to (1) attribute the development of diabetes to lifestyle factors (versus genes), and (2) perceive control over developing diabetes, than was actually reported. Implications of actual and perceived discordance for effective health communication and patient education are discussed. We investigated associations of blood pressure (BP) with albuminuria and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) in young, middle and older aged patients with hypertension and/or diabetes mellitus. Study participants were treated patients with hypertension or diabetes, enrolled in a China nationwide registry. The 2510 patients were classified into young (<45 years,  = 345), middle (45-64 years,  = 1383) and older (≥65 years,  = 782) age groups. GBD-9 cell line Clinic BP was measured three times consecutively on each of the two clinic visits. These six readings were averaged for analyses. Albuminuria was defined as a urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio of ≥30 mg/g. LVH was assessed by the electrocardiogram (ECG) Cornell product and voltage methods. The prevalence of albuminuria and ECG-LVH was 17.8 and 6.5%, respectively. Mean (±SD) systolic/diastolic BP was 132.0 ± 16.5/85.2 ± 11.9 mmHg, 136.8 ± 17.9/81.7 ± 11.2 mmHg, and 139.8 ± 16.7/75.8 ± 10.4 mmHg in the young, middle and older age groups. In the young age group, the prevalence of albuminuria increased from 8.8% in systolic/diastolic BP <120/80 mmHg to 14.6, 16.0% and 16.5% in 120-129/80-84, 130-139/85-89 and ≥140/90 mmHg, respectively. The corresponding values were 8.9, 7.0, 18.1 and 22.2%, respectively, in the middle age group, and 21.2, 15.5, 16.4 and 24.4%, respectively, in the older age group. Adjusted analyses confirmed the J-shaped relation between BP and albuminuria in the older but not young age group. The prevalence of ECG-LVH was significantly ( for trend ≤0.04) higher with increasing BP similarly in all age groups. The association between BP and organ damage seems to differ in young, middle and older aged patients for albuminuria but not ECG-LVH.The association between BP and organ damage seems to differ in young, middle and older aged patients for albuminuria but not ECG-LVH. Men who have sex with men (MSM) are disparately impacted by HIV in sub-Saharan Africa and condomless anal intercourse (CAI) is a major driver of HIV transmission. The objective of the current study was to identify factors associated with CAI among MSM in Bamako, Mali, among whom HIV prevalence was 13.7%. A bio-behavioral survey was conducted between October 2014 and February 2015 using respondent-driven sampling to recruit 552 adult MSM. Weighted statistical analyses were conducted to determine the prevalence of CAI with one's most recent male partner and survey logistic procedures were used to identify associated factors. The prevalence of CAI with one's most recent male partner was 40.7%. Associated factors included inability to get a condom when needed (aOR = 5.8, 95%CI 2.7-12.3) and believing CAI is acceptable under some circumstances (aOR = 8.4, 95%CI 4.4-16.2). Programs addressing HIV among MSM in Mali should aim to increase access to condoms and education about HIV prevention through consistent condom use during anal intercourse.Programs addressing HIV among MSM in Mali should aim to increase access to condoms and education about HIV prevention through consistent condom use during anal intercourse.Meiosis is a carefully choreographed dynamic process that re-purposes proteins from somatic/vegetative cell division, as well as meiosis-specific factors, to carry out the differentiation and recombination pathway common to sexually reproducing eukaryotes. Studies of individual proteins from a variety of different experimental protocols can make it difficult to compare details between them. Using a consistent protocol in otherwise wild-type fission yeast cells, this report provides an atlas of dynamic protein behaviour of representative proteins at different stages during normal zygotic meiosis in fission yeast. This establishes common landmarks to facilitate comparison of different proteins and shows that initiation of S phase likely occurs prior to nuclear fusion/karyogamy.The hippocampus is a brain area central for cognition. Mutations in the human SOX2 transcription factor cause neurodevelopmental defects, leading to intellectual disability and seizures, together with hippocampal dysplasia. We generated an allelic series of Sox2 conditional mutations in mouse, deleting Sox2 at different developmental stages. Late Sox2 deletion (from E11.5, via Nestin-Cre) affects only postnatal hippocampal development; earlier deletion (from E10.5, Emx1-Cre) significantly reduces the dentate gyrus (DG), and the earliest deletion (from E9.5, FoxG1-Cre) causes drastic abnormalities, with almost complete absence of the DG. We identify a set of functionally interconnected genes (Gli3, Wnt3a, Cxcr4, p73 and Tbr2), known to play essential roles in hippocampal embryogenesis, which are downregulated in early Sox2 mutants, and (Gli3 and Cxcr4) directly controlled by SOX2; their downregulation provides plausible molecular mechanisms contributing to the defect. Electrophysiological studies of the Emx1-Cre mouse model reveal altered excitatory transmission in CA1 and CA3 regions. The extent of cellular heterogeneity involved in neuronal regeneration after spinal cord injury (SCI) remains unclear. Therefore, we established stress-responsive transgenic zebrafish embryos with SCI. As a result, we found an SCI-induced cell population, termed SCI stress-responsive regenerating cells (SrRCs), essential for neuronal regeneration post-SCI. SrRCs were mostly composed of subtypes of radial glia (RGs-SrRCs) and neuron stem/progenitor cells (NSPCs-SrRCs) that are able to differentiate into neurons, and they formed a bridge across the lesion and connected with neighbouring undamaged motor neurons post-SCI. Compared to SrRCs at the caudal side of the SCI site (caudal-SrRCs), rostral-SrRCs participated more actively in neuronal regeneration. After RNA-seq analysis, we discovered that caveolin 1 (cav1) was significantly upregulated in rostral-SrRCs and that cav1 was responsible for the axonal regrowth and regenerative capability of rostral-SrRCs. Collectively, we define a specific SCI-induced cell population, SrRCs, involved in neuronal regeneration, demonstrate that rostral-SrRCs exhibit higher neuronal differentiation capability and prove that cav1 is predominantly expressed in rostral-SrRCs, playing a major role in neuronal regeneration after SCI.
